Site Stuff

I've moved!

This site is now located on Hostway in Chicago. Let's see if this turns out to be better than the past year on Interland (fingers crossed). A bit of repointing nuttiness ensued (strangeness courtesy Network Solutions), but it seems to be ironed out now. I can see my own site updates, which is always nice.

A matter that's peripherally related to this site in that it involves my keyboard. There's a new kitten loose on the premises. It has way too much energy. It attacks anything that moves. It attacks many things that do not move -- including me, when I'm sleeping. It cannot understand why the keyboard is not a place to jump around.

As a result, I've been producing some deeply weird typing of late. This will probably continue until I get the concept of "No!" through its tiny skull.

Although the creature is somewhat cute in the usual kitten fashion (or, at least, it has become that way -- initially it was filthy, skinny, and flea-infested), it has been going out of its way to make us all bonkers. (Mitsou, Cubby, and Chicklet hate it, in a low-key, hissing, growling way, but they're cultivating philosophy and trying their best to ignore it.) At present, it has no name, other than "You-little-asshole/Spawn-of-Satan, Get-the-hell-off-that!" (or, for veteranary purposes, "That Kitten"). If you would like to suggest a more appropriate name, email me.

(Oh, lookie. It's sleeping. Aaah, no, don't wake it up...!)

Software

Here's a little on the software used to create this site.

  • TextPad 4.0. I'm typing every single thing that you see here out in a text editor: TextPad is far classier than the editors that come with Windows.
  • TopStyle Pro 2. The program used to produce and check the cascading style sheets is a little unintuitive, but gets the job done.
  • CSE HTML Validator 4.0. This elderly version of the program, which I got secondhand, operates in conjunction with both TextPad and TopStyle, so that's fairly spiff. This one tells you exactly where and how you messed up your coding. The trouble is that it's heinously expensive software -- I wouldn't have it if it hadn't been used. On the other paw, there's a free "lite" version, which I've never tried.
  • Paint Shop Pro 7. It's the cheaper alternative for those who aren't professional web designers and just want graphics that look okay. I leapt from version 5 to version 7 and am now slightly confoozled by it all, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

More on the content

The only sections of this site that are updated on a regular basis are my work credit pages -- the book list and the (insanely long) list of journal articles that's linked to it. For the usual reasons, my books page is not strictly complete; however, it serves as a reasonable overview of what I've been working on all these years.

The résumé page includes publishers I've worked with both directly and via packager subcontracting. That includes those I've lost through changes of ownership, and a few that no longer exist (please keep in mind that I've been in business for over ten years).

The samples consist of sections of a paper markup. I'm currently wielding pencils far more often than I did in the past. I also have samples of computer work available; for copyright reasons these are not on public display (they're the original and edited files for published books and articles you'll see on my book list). Just email me and ask for the username and password for the samples directory if you'd like to look those over.

Note that if you're another freelance editor teaching yourself about computer editing, this directory might be of some use to you. I've included tracked changes, compare files, and straight clean-up and tagged edits in here.

There is also a personal section on this site that I add to on special occasions. These pages won't be of interest to anyone who doesn't happen to know me, so please ignore them.

Regarding the mailing list

Ran a mailing list for publishing freelancers for over four years. Now I don't. So this section has gone bye-bye.
